2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Revitalize Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Follows Poor Reception

The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming early showing last autumn.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified employees about this decision through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a distinct game identity.

Ismailer noted that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to address player expectations.

A Pattern of Key Acquisitions

This announcement echoes a similar action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the entire text from the president's communication:

Team—

I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a update, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and talented developers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re eager for that relationship to endure.”

Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last fall’s the game demo was enlightening. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It revealed the need for a clearer vision.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to heart and overhauled the title with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to fulfill its potential to our fans.

Our confidence in this project increases every day. To advance the incredible advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to announce the new hire as the incoming Director of the team. After a period of talks, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.

His leadership and background in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having spent the recent years producing and managing some of the most popular series in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in receiving Ben soon. We are all eager to persist observing the evolution of the game in the time to come.

The President

Background of the New Leader

Brinkman presently serves in the role of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously worked at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Vision

The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 alongside a community playtest. Initially, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description reads. "Challenge the rivals with new abilities, risks, and tests that shift every session. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and trust your group can earn top ranking? The option is in your hands."

The game has not yet received an official launch window or platforms, but players can anticipate more updates as production progresses.
