Fury Erupts as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Spurs Fierce Criticism

Figures from across the political aisle and the Hollywood world are coming together to censure former President Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the shocking passing of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Online Post

After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on social media to label the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". In a message, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".

Law Enforcement Update and Arrest

Police have since announced the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bond was established at a substantial amount.

A Torrent of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's words was swift and harsh.

“What a vile and vile comment,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly criticized the statements. She pointed to previous comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"

California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a sick man."

Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."

Criticism from His Own Party

Some Republican lawmakers also expressed dismay.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.

Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly dared others in his party to justify the statements.

Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the dangers of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.

"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States fall, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."

Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation after the killing of another individual.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" as posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
