Line of Duty Confirmed for Seventh Season on BBC
The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-episode series written by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, according to the network.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."
The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only arrived recently.
New Challenges for The Team
Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."
New Character and Intricate Plot
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.
However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser hinted.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had so many fans watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."
Actor Responses
Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."
"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."
Series Legacy
Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.
Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.
The finale of season six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.
However, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
