Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
