The Crafted Strongman

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and the country's pop-culture machine have collaborated to craft a made-to-measure persona of the president. This character is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reframed as a local 007 who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

A notable instance is a TV series launched last fall, directed by a Kremlin supporter. The protagonist is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from disorder. Although he is called Mikhail, the message is unmistakable: the savior must be a known figure from the secret services.

International depictions often end up reinforcing this same narrative instead of debunking it. A new film based on a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the leader's mythology by presenting him not as a cause but as a symptom, moving the focus to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, the president is shown as having been chosen by influential figures to stabilise the nation because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and practically plead him to become president. He replies is that he would rather govern from the background, seeking permanent power.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. In reality, these events ever happened.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one ever begged Putin to accept the role. The presidency was effectively a casting call with no shortage of contenders. At the centre to this process stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who planned to control the country in practice.

Interestingly, the move to framing him as a “007” could partly have been inspired by Daniel Craig’s arrival as 007. The grittier interpretation led local outlets and social media to draw visual parallels with Putin. Edited images swapping Craig’s face with his surfaced on Moscow streets, fueling the increasing trend to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an star well-liked by viewers there, the authorities are likely to seize the opportunity to frame his casting as a small victory. Its omission of public dissent, the political rivals, or prominent activists in the story, despite covering recent years, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, the president is often an omnipotent figure who remains unseen on screen. His influence is signaled through photographs or calls “from above”.
