The Red Devils Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. She has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen additional business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
