Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
